Introduction

Importing contacts allows you to convert your contact base to Messaging quickly and easily. In this article we will learn how to import contacts.

To start the import, go to the Contacts section and click the ellipsis (the three stacked dots) in the upper-right side of the page. Choose “Import Contacts”.

Now you are on the page with an opt-in agreement. Check the box to confirm that your contacts permitted sending campaigns, were not borrowed from a third party, or purchased or rented. Click “Next”.

On the next page, you need to upload a file with your contacts. There are some requirements to your file:
It should have a CSV or XLSX format.
Maximum size of the file is 50 MB; maximum number of rows is 5000.
The first row must contain the column headings that must follow in succession without empty cells.

Only the first sheet will be imported. Contacts with the same email addresses will not be imported.

Download your file and click “Next”.

Now let’s choose import rules. There are two options. You can add new contacts without updating existing ones.

Also, you can add new contacts and update existing ones. If you choose this option, another one appears: you can import a file with empty cells that will erase data in corresponding already present cells. Enable a toggle to do this. If this option is disabled, the empty cells will not affect your already present data.

Your file can’t be imported without an email address. Make sure that the email fields are mapped. If not, you will see an error notification.

You can map fields on this page manually if they aren’t mapped automatically. To do this, click on the “Do Not Import” button. You can choose custom or general fields from the dropdown list.

You can continue without mapping fields (but email fields should be mapped). In this case, you will need to confirm this action by clicking “Yes, continue” after clicking “Confirm Import”.

You can also change your file on the Mapping Data page. Click the “Change File” button, then click “Confirm”. You will be redirected to the file uploading page where you can delete the previously uploaded file and upload a new one.

While the import is in progress, you can’t start another import. The “Import” button will be disabled as well. Once the import is complete, you can start importing again.null

There are four options of import results. Let’s have a look at them.

1. Successful import: all your contacts were imported. We recommend you immediately send a blast to new contacts to make sure that they want to receive your emails. You can use the Welcome Email Blast template by clicking the “Create Welcome Blast” button.

2. Contacts were imported with errors: import was completed, but some contacts were not imported for different reasons. Click the “View Details” button to see what exact contacts weren’t imported. On the Import History page you can download a needed report. After that, update your file and upload it again.

3. Import error: contacts have not been uploaded. Possible reasons for this could be an incorrect file format or connection problems. We recommend that you check the file format and upload the contacts again.

4. Import blocked: the number of contacts that could not pass the verification exceeded the limit. The contacts that agree to receive emails should only be found in the imported file. We recommend that you check the contacts using third-party services. Then remove invalid contacts and retry the import.
