Introduction

This article describes what segmentation is and how it can help you better interact with your audience. This information will be useful for you if you keep sending blastsautomations and autoresponders to all your contacts en masse and wonder why there is very little result - or no result at all. Together we will create your first segment on the TruMESSAGING platform.

We will learn the following:

What Is Segmentation

Segmentation is a way to divide your customers into groups (or segments) based on some type of shared characteristics, e. g. age, gender, nationality, personal interests, hobbies, etc. For instance, if your campaign contains information on a sports equipment sale in a local store, a very certain group of people (i. e. young people who are interested in sports and live nearby) will be glad to receive such a message. Segmentation helps you maintain a personal approach to each group, offering them exactly what they need. Target each segment individually, and your performance in email marketing will increase dramatically.

How To Configure Segments In TruMESSAGING

1. Go to the Segments section and click the Add Segment button.

2. Enter the name of your segment. Come up with a short and descriptive name for the segment to help you remember what type of contacts it contains.

null

3. Click Add New Rule. A rule is a condition based on which the contacts for blasts, autoresponders, and automations are selected.

4. Rules can be defined based on either tags (see the current step) or fields (see step 6). A tag is an identifier assigned to a contact for its description, categorization, search, and defining the internal structure. For instance, we most probably assigned a tag 'sport' to someone who visited pages related to sports goods on your website. Just type the name of this previously assigned tag into the corresponding field and select 'exists' in the next field. To exclude all the contacts with this tag from the segment, select 'does not exist'.

5. To add more rules, click Add New Rule.

6. Let's now create a rule using fields. A field is a set of values of the same data type, for example name, age, country, phone number, ets. According to the figure below, we add to our segment people aged from 12 to 30 and living in a certain city. e. g. Chicago. All these conditions are 'and'-related, which means all of them must be true for the contact to become a part of the segment. If your conditions are 'or'-related, then at least one of them must be true, and that would be enough.

7. When you are done with your rules, click Save.

8. Your segment appeared in the Segments section.
